Its named after local folklore, which says that injured ocean fish go up the river to heal in the hole's sulfur waters before returning to the gulf.
The sinkhole opens at around 30 feet wide expanding to roughly 150 feet wide with depths up to 140 feet.
Around 70 to 80 feet, there is a dense layer of hydrogen sulfide that creates a sulfur smell. It is a gathering...

Great place to see manatees! Being closer to the head spring is great for swimming and kayaking etc but if you want to see manatees then stay closer to hospital hole, you’ll see them most in the early morning and late afternoon. The current is intense!!

In on a river. You need some sort of water flotation device to stay in the area comfortably. Around 72 degrees all year around.

From dive perspective: day we dove was super clear, day after rainfall, dove down to 70 Ft right about where the sulfide layer is. Fun cenote dive with lots of little holes and whatnot to look at. Springs are 72, about 20’ it got to 76-77. No mantees but lots of fish hanging out in the deco zone. Will eventually go all the way down after I get a little more certified. Fun...

A short paddle up from Roger's Park. A good area to take a break from the current. It is around 130 deep drop in the center. We did see manatees swimming around nearly everytime that we have been here.
